Independent labels deliver 80% of new European music. But they are usually outmuscled by major labels and big technology companies.
Helen Smith is head of IMPALA, the Independent Music Companies Association, which represents over 4000 small music companies and associations. It’s her job to influence the European Union on topics such as copyright and piracy from the independents’ perspective, as well as doing deals with big companies on behalf of smaller players.
In this keynote, Helen talks about her experience representing independent labels across more than a decade as the European music industry changed in the digital era – from Napster to Spotify and Apple Music.
